Derby's Volvo Citybuses 1983 - 2008

Volvo manufactured vehicles first appeared on stage carriage work in Derby during 1981 with the arrival of a former West Yorkshire B55-10. This was closely followed by a batch of B55-10 TD70 variants. These curious front engined devices are covered elsewhere on the site.

1983 saw the introduction of the "Citybus" based on the Volvo B10M chassis with various batches entering service until 1988.

Incredibly by 11th November 2008 all of the original Citybuses had been taken out of service, this in the same year the last Fleetline had also been retired. Indeed the introduction of Volvos into the fleet soon saw the faithful Fleetline fall out of favour many of which were directly replaced by Citybuses as deliveries gathered pace. Interesting to think the Citybus managed just 25 years in Derby whereas the Fleetline spanned 42 years! At the time of writing a handful of secondhand examples are still running although probably not for much longer as more new vehicles arrive.
