With the introduction of High Speed Trains (HSTs) to the Midland line route to London Class 45/1 locomotives were gradually transferred to other passenger duties including trans Pennine workings originating at Liverpool Lime Street. The 1100 Scarborough - Liverpool Lime Street approaches St. Helens Junction on 15th January 1983 with 45106 in charge. This locomotive was the last of the class to work a passenger train on 3rd February 1989.

45107 stands in Derby Locomotive Works on 21st December 1983.

45108 reflects on the platform at Derby whilst working the 1747 Cardiff - Leeds (1E73) of 14th December 1982.

For operational reasons certain services to London St. pancras would be powered by a pair of 45/1s working in tandem (traincrew in each locomotive). 45109 leading 45120 stand at St. Pancras with the 1700 service from Derby of 13th November 1983.
